RE: Duggars and their 18 kids

With so many couples today opting for no children, the planet impact is probably a wash anyway.

RE: Land!!

Beautiful country. I bought some property in the Big Bend area which is gorgeous in a different way. Seeing how I grew up and live in the crowded northeast, I like the wide open spaces and mountains in the desert southwest. Plan to do an off-grid thing similar to you and spend some winters there; possibly make the move permanent when I'm ready to retire.

RE: Hypnotists

For me I've found that processed carbs and sugar are my enemy. If I can go 5 days without eating any, and just eating meats, cheeses, eggs, fruits, veggies, and yogurt, that I don't crave the carbs as much as before, and it makes it so much easier to eat right. It does take the full 5 days to break that cycle. After that I find that I can eat right (as in no processed carbs/sugar) for 6 days, then on the 7th day eat whatever, so I'm not deprived, then go back to not eating it for 6 days, that really helps me. It also helps not to think of it as a diet to be broken, but a new way of eating.

RE: Would you want to be a teacher?!?!?

A reminder of why my kids are homeschooled. Real life, real learning, every day. I agree that good teachers can't do their jobs the way they want to with all of the rules from on high. Dumbing down...unbelievable.

RE: Watch What You Do in Your Front Yard!

The street view of my house was taken last fall. My RV is parked in the side yard; neighbor's house decorated for Halloween. Nobody's home. Creepy. Wrace, not all areas have street views.

RE: 2nd Degree Burns!!! OUCH!

I spilled boiling water on my hand once and it was NOT fun. I did find that it hurt like he** every time I tried to take my hand out of the cool water bath. Finally I just had to do it. 10 minutes later the horrific pain settled down into a managable pain level. But cold did feel good! My son spilled a microwaved dinner onto his leg and the gravy caused 2nd degree burns on his leg. Silvadene cream worked wonders.

RE: The U.S. is doomed, or atleast I am........

I'm right there with ya, buddy. Working my tail off, trying to pay down some debts, while still feeding the young 'uns. I want to go full time so bad, but unless I pay a few things off I'll still be strapped. Can I go 2 more years? Jay

RE: We Are Going Off The Grid In TN

I plan on doing something similar on my Texas property in the future with wind and solar. I'll likely have a backup propane generator (as I'll have all propane appliances anyway). Cool!

RE: Staycation

I bought an RV because I intend to use it. I'll cut back on other things if it means putting gas into the RV. I haven't cancelled any trips and don't plan to; the only factor limiting my trips this summer is work. Still longing for the day that I can go full-time and work from the RV.

RE: Another thing happening here because of the downturn

They just pulled the line of credit on my brother's house. Unfortunately it's not closed, just 'suspended.' Therefore he can't borrow against his house for any improvements, nor can he try to get a new line of credit elsewhere because that one is just suspended but not really closed. And they won't close it, either. Jay

RE: Which Scary Movie?

When I was 8 I watched The Blob on TV. For months afterwards I could see the blob oozing under doors, over the windowsills, etc.

RE: This really blows!!!

A Ford salesman close to me says that Edge Chrome wheels are not true chrome at all, but plastic inserts.

RE: The terrible two's are here...

I LOVED the twos!! I call them the terrific twos! Budding independence, the ME DO IT!! and the zest for exploring their world. We're now entering the teens; so far so good!

RE: Stolen license plate rant

Here in CT they finally changed it so that the registration sticker is NOT on the plate but inside the windshield. Won't stop theft for other trailer use but does for the stickers. In some areas before they changed it, where theft was high, they okayed it so that people could put their plates in the rear window of the vehicle to prevent it from being stolen. Jay

RE: Toilet bowl won't hold water.

If you've tried the cleaning, hanger trick, vaseline, oil, etc etc and your toilet is still leaking, try the 'slamming' method. Kind of what the others were alluding to. Basically put your foot on the pedal and release quickly so it slams shut several times. I had an RV guy do this and seriously I thought he was gonna owe me a new toilet! But it worked and I haven't had leak issues since. Worth a try before you replace it. I, too, had tried all of the other remedies first. But slamming the blade a few times can help. Jay

RE: How did you end up with your Class A?

Started with an 18 yr old pop up in 2006, sold it and bought the Bounder in 2007. So we kind of jumped right in. While we loved the pop up, it didn't quite fit our needs as we like to do road trips and spend time traveling, rather than parking and camping.

RE: Update: Death in RV near Indy 500

I thought the tall genny exhaust pipes were required in these situations? Were they being used? If so, very scary! I thought the purpose was to get the exhaust up and away from the RVs and not let it hover at ground level to seep into RVs. Stuff to think about if camping in these types of situations, for sure.

RE: wal mart situation

On our recent trip to VA, we overnighted at WM once on the way down --pulled over at 11pm, left at 8am, dropped $150 in the WM gas station. On the way home, we overnighted at a different WM, pulling in at midnight and leaving at 8am. Didn't spend anything at that particular WM, BUT: we did drop $300 at a different WM on the first day of driving to buy food and other essentials for our first trip. So, $450 for 2 nights of parking is more than reasonable IMO. And when we overnight, we park and sleep. That's it. I like driving late into the night on travel days. It's inconvenient to find an off the beaten path campground, the office is closed, and try to navigate narrow campground roads in the dark and find an open spot to park in without disturbing other people. WM is easier and I don't annoy people who paid good money for their site. Jay
